There were two SHORT-EARED OWLS in view from about 4:40 to 5:00 PM
yesterday at the previously-described location in the field along
Bullfrog Road west of Taneytown. I arrived at 4:00 and parked near
the eastern end of the wooded area on the north side of the road,
along with two birders from Virginia. After 40 minutes we had seen
only a female/immature harrier hunting in the distance, so I decided
to try a little further west. I drove down the road, found another
place to park on the verge, and then saw the owls almost immediately.
They put on a delightful show: flying along the top of the hill,
calling, and perching on a tall plant stalk. Thanks to Jim Wilkinson
for reporting this great sighting.
On the way to Bullfrog Road I stopped at River Bend Park, off of Route
26 northeast of Frederick. In the pond between the soccer field and
the Wal-Mart, the COMMON LOON (reported to eBird by Steve Back on
December 9) was still present, along with 400 Canada Geese and a pair
of Cackling Geese.
