Saundra,
Here are the main waterfowl viewing sites in Piney Run Park:

1. The boat dock area has a good view of the central part of the lake.

2. A spur trail off the Field Trail takes you northwest along the shoreline
to a vantage point where you can better see the birds in the farm cove
across the lake and in other coves.

3. A path behind the nature center (next to the deer exclosure plot) leads
to the edge of the lake where there is a good view toward the dam and of
other coves on the east side.

4. On the east side of the lake at the other end of Martz Road off Route 26
there are paths that lead to the edge of the lake and provide a different
perspective of a large part of the lake.

5. By parking at the beginning of Brass Eagle Court at White Rock Road and
taking a circuitous and ill-defined path through the brush to the edge of
the lake you can have a close view of the birds in the extreme northwest
part of the lake. Because you are so close to the birds they often flush
upon seeing you but many birds hang out here. This area is no longer posted
for no trespassing which it once was to keep out fisherman.

6. That leaves the southwest part of the lake which can be reached by a
long hike on the Inlet Trail.

I usually do 1, 2, 3, and 5 to make a fairly complete report. November
through March
the park is open weekdays at no charge. It is closed on weekends but you
can park near the gate and walk in. April through October there is an
excessive entry fee (seniors get in free).
