This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, December 20, at
2 PM. 

Top birds this week are BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in MD, CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRD* in MD, LE CONTE'S SPARROW* in MD and VA, and WESTERN
TANAGER* in VA. 

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, GREAT CORMORANT, falcons, gulls,
SHORT-EARED OWL, hummingbird, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE*, LAPLAND LONGSPUR,
warblers, sparrows, DICKCISSEL and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was at the Elms Environmental Education Center, St.
Mary's Co, MD seen December 18 and 19.

The CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD* visiting a garden near Easton, Talbot Co, MD,
since October 23 was banded on Dec 9. The garden is in a private community
where parking is limited and all viewing is from inside a townhouse. Access
can still be attained, but is by appointment only.
To arrange a time for a visit, phone the home owner at 410-822-1966; she
will provide directions to her home and instructions about parking. Please
be courteous and respectful. 

The LE CONTE'S SPARROW* found November 25 at Swan Harbor Farm, Harford Co,
MD, continued to be seen throughout this past week as it moved along the
reeds on the south dike of the marshy impoundment. Two LE CONTE'S SPARROWS
were seen on the Hopewell CBC in Charles Co, VA on December 18.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE found December 8 at the intersection of Zion
and Campbell Rd, Louisa Co, VA was reported again on December 18.
Another GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was on a farm pond near Ricaud's Bridge
Road, Kent Co, MD on December 18. A CACKLING GOOSE was seen on December 16
on the Triadelphia CBC on the Damascus Road farm pond, Montgomery Co, MD.
Another CACKLING GOOSE was at Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on December 18.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was at the Bayside Development Pond, Worcester Co, MD
on December 19. REDHEADS were found in several locations:
Beauvue Ponds, St. Mary's Co, MD on December 13; Black Hill Regional Park,
Montgomery Co, MD; Beauvue Ponds, St. Mary's Co MD on December 16; Swan
Harbor, Harford Co, MD with a high count of 37 on December 17 reduced to 9
on December 17 and Ivy Creek Park, Lynchburg VA on December 18. Two COMMON
GOLDENEYE were at Swan Harbor, Harford Co, MD and one was at Black Hills
Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on December 18.

A GREAT CORMORANT was at Lake Brittle seen on the Plains/Airlie CBC on
December 19.

This was a good week for falcons. Two MERLIN were at Kenilworth Park, DC on
December 15. Another MERLIN was chasing and being chased by crows at the
Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Prince George's Co, MD on
December 16. More MERLINS were seen on December 17:
two at Hains Point, DC; one at the Ace Tree Nursery, Montgomery Co, MD and
one on the DC CBC near the Stone Bridge. A PEREGRINE FALCON was at Hains
Point, DC and another was on the Wilson Bridge on December 17.
More PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen on December 18: one at Great Oak Pond, Kent
Co, MD and one at Bailey's Crossroads, Falls Church, Fairfax Co, VA.

A BLACK-HEADED GULL has been visiting the parking lot in front of Best Buy
at the Hunt Valley Mall, Baltimore, MD seen from December 13 through
December 20. When tired of shopping, the gull spends some time at Paper Mill
Flats, Baltimore Co, MD. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on the flood wall in
downtown Richmond, VA on December 13, 14 and 15 and at the lake at
Innsbrook, western Henrico Co, VA on December 14.

SHORT-EARED OWL sightings continue this past week with numbers between two
and four birds hunting over a large field on the east side of Bullfrog Rd,
about a 1/4 mile north of Baumgardner Rd, west of Taneytown in Carroll Co,
MD, during the week. SHORT-EARED OWLS were also seen at the Oxon Hill Farm
on the DC CBC, December 16.

A Selasphorus Hummingbird visited a feeder in Virginia Beach during the
week.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE* was on Stonebridge Road in Warren Co, VA just south of
the Clarke Co line on December 20.

Eighteen LAPLAND LONGSPURS were on Oland Road, Frederick Co, MD on December
18.

Warblers other than YELLOW-RUMPED continued to pop up at a variety of
locations including ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS seen at Hopewell VA and at
Winkler Botanical Preserve, Alexandria, VA on December 17. NASHVILLE
WARBLERS were seen at Lake Artemisia, Prince George's Co, MD on December 15;
at Hopewell VA on December 17 and at Chesapeake Farms, Kent Co, MD on
December 18. PALM WARBLERS were at the Cub Run Stream Valley Park, Fairfax
Co, VA on December 18 and at the Great Dismal Swamp NWR on December 19. A
PRAIRIE WARBLER was at Assateague, Worcester Co, MD on December 16.
 
Five AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were at Swan Harbor, Harford Co, MD on December
16 reduced to two birds on December 18. An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was at the
Howard Conservancy, Howard Co, MD on December 19.

 A DICKCISSEL continued to be seen at Hains Point, SW DC, with a report on
December 14.

RUSTY BLACKBIRDS continued to be seen in the area this past week.
