As we were unwrapping presents Christmas morning we sensed a shadow fall across the room and I looked out to see, on the deck of our very suburban Bethesda house, a Turkey Vulture perched on the crook of the bird feeder. “We’re not dead, yet!” I said crossly. At which point a passing neighbor with dog startled him and he took wing. Later I discovered that this bird hadn’t suddenly developed a taste for hulled sunflower seeds. There was a dismembered squirrel left on the deck by a hawk or owl. It may be the burbs, but the critters are closer than you think.
Happy New Year.
