This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, December 27, at
8 AM. 

Top birds this week are BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in DE,
WESTERN KINGBIRD in MD, and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK* in MD.

Other birds of interest include CACKLING GOOSE, BROWN PELICAN, gulls,
SHORT-EARED OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, COMMON RAVEN, warblers, sparrows, and
BALTIMORE ORIOLE. 

A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* continuing at the Elms Environmental Education Center,
St. Mary's Co, MD was seen through December 25.

A hatch year male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD visiting a feeder in Georgetown, DE was
banded on Dec 24.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen at the Hurlock Waste Water Treatment ponds,
Dorchester Co, MD on Dec 25 and 26.

A BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK* is coming to a feeder at Market St and N 6th St in
Denton, Caroline Co, MD. Parking is limited and the bird can only be viewed
from the sidewalk. Please see the extensive notes on seeing this bird on
MDOsprey list server. The bird was seen throughout the past week. 

A CACKLING GOOSE was seen on the Potomac River just south of Memorial Bridge
in Washington, DC on Dec 21, 24, and 25. A second CACKLING GOOSE was nearby
on the Potomac at the south end of Theodore Roosevelt Island on Dec 24. A
CACKLING GOOSE was seen in a pond on Laws Ford Rd, Fauquier Co, VA on Dec
26.

At least three BROWN PELICANS, unusual in this season, were spotted on Dec
23 from the south end of Rt 8 on Kent Island, Queen Annes Co, MD.

A BLACK-HEADED GULL sporadically visited the busy parking lot in front of
Best Buy at the Hunt Valley Mall, Baltimore, MD on Dec 20, 21, 22, and 26.
Another BLACK-HEADED GULL was in Swan Cove, Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co,
VA on Dec 23. An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Salisbury Landfill, Wicomico
Co, MD on Dec 21. An ICELAND GULL was found at Depot Pond, Upper Marlboro,
Prince Georges Co, MD on Dec 22. A first year GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on the
river in Richmond, VA on Dec 24 and 25. 

SHORT-EARED OWL sightings continue this past week with numbers between two
and four birds hunting over a large field on the east side of Bullfrog Rd,
about a 1/4 mile north of Baumgardner Rd, west of Taneytown in Carroll Co,
MD. The latest report is Dec 26. 

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co, MD on Dec 24.

A COMMON RAVEN flew over the Potomac River at Great Falls National Park,
Fairfax Co, VA on Dec 25.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found at the Fishing Creek marsh, Chesapeake
Beach, Calvert Co, MD on Dec 21 and 22. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen at this
spot on Dec 23. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was spotted in Hopewell, VA on Dec 24.
Three PRAIRIE WARBLERS were seen on the Beach Rd, Chincoteague NWR on Dec
22.

Four AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were at the Howard Conservancy, Howard Co, MD on
December 26. An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was found along Cornfield Harbor Rd,
St Mary's Co, MD on Dec 21.

Two different birders in Chesapeake, VA have multiple BALTIMORE ORIOLES at
their feeders.
