Hi all,
(a little fyi)

Since I raise the 'doves' mentioned (actually white homing pigeons) as a hobby,
and have a friend who is in the business of doing dove releases, there are safeguards for the birds.  Number one: the pigeons go through a training progress of several months so they know where the loft  and food is. Number two: any owner with integrity will NOT release the birds in stormy or inclement weather.  As with anything, there are individual birds that do get lost from time to time. There are some jurisdictions that do not allow releases.  There are many domesticated

breeds of pigeon, in fact 2 weeks ago I placed a pair (Modena and Indian Fantail) that were dumped on the street with a new home.  Unfortunately, these are not homing breeds.

I've done a bit of quick research since you sent this. There don't seem to be any instances of significant feral bird populations forming from practices such as this. I'm not giving a personal opinion, or saying MOS should give an opinion on the matter, but in other areas it has never really posed a problem, and I've been unable to find convincing arguments from conservationists denouncing the practice.
