Substituting for Mike Welch, who usually leads Sector 8W for the Sugarloaf Mountain CBC, Fred Hoffman, Pablo Garcia-Ojeda, and I had an interesting time counting in Black Hill Regional Park, Montgomery Co. We tallied 48 species and 768 individual birds. Highlights for us were Bald Eagle, Gray Catbird, Tundra Swan, and Hooded and Common Mergansers.

Not having done this Sector before, I don’t know how our results compare with years past, but I suspect numbers of birds are likely down. It was a cold day with the front that had just come through and the wind that increased through the day keeping the land birds in hiding. Looking at the habitat we birded, it is amazing to me to tally only 5 Carolina Wren, 7 White-breasted Nuthatch, no Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 4 Northern Mockingbird, 6 Yellow-rumped Warbler, 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker, 4 Blue Jay, and 35 White-throated Sparrow and 12 Dark-eyed Junco, to name a few.

Complete consolidated list is below.
