Yesterday Keith Costley and I birded St. Mary's County. We started at
the Elms and after diligent searching we saw the male *Barrow's Goldeneye*.
It was slightly north of the observation point and within a quarter mile.
It was with many Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads, Long-tailed Ducks, and
Horned Grebes. We also saw both Red-throated and Common Loons and four
Forster's Terns. In the woods and thickets along the trail we saw a
Sapsucker, Hermit Thrushes, and Fox Sparrows.
At Point Lookout there were hundreds of Surf Scoters and one Black
Scoter, many Buffleheads, both Red-throated and Common Loons again, some
Long-tailed Ducks and Horned Grebes, and only one Common Goldeneye. There
was a small flock of sandpipers on the sand bar off the point but looking
directly into the bright sun they were impossible to identify.
On Long Neck Road we found a small flock of Meadowlarks. Cornfield
Harbor Road had nothing notable. At Piney Point we saw about 17 Common
Loons and one Red-throated with small numbers of waterfowl.
We ended the day at the Beauvue Ponds which held 4 Canada Geese, 1 *Mute
Swan*, 15, Tundra Swans, 20 Gadwall, 1 Baldpate, 11 *Shovelers*, 70
Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Ruddy Ducks, 8 Pied-billed Grebes, and 10 Coots. Keith
saw a Woodcock at sunset. From Abells Wharf we saw 3 Double-crested
Cormorants in Breton Bay.
