I drove out to Hagerstown this morning to look for the Loggerhead Shrike
along Hagers Crossing Drive. It was not visible from the road so Skippy and
I spent about two hours in the field, crisscrossing the entire area from
the first houses east of the roundabout to past the end of Hagers Crossing
Drive. I finally spotted it at the extreme northern side of the field, to
the right and far beyond the mound where it was seen in recent days. It was
working the fence line near the trees separating the field from the farm
beyond. I was joined by Elaine Hendricks and Andy Martin. After moving
closer to that part of the field the three of us enjoyed close views of the
shrike through Andy's telescope. The bird dropped to the ground several
times, disappearing from view for a minute or more each time. Sometimes it
perched very low and never would have been seen from most angles.
