This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, January 10, at
8 AM. 

Top birds this week are BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD, WESTERN KINGBIRD in MD,
and BREWER'S SPARROW* in VA.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, RED-THROATED LOON, SANDHILL
CRANE, jaegers, gulls, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE*, NORTHERN
SHRIKE, SEDGE WREN, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, warblers, sparrows,
SUMMER TANAGER, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE. 

A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* was seen again at the Elms Environmental Education
Center, St. Mary's Co, MD on Jan 8.

The WESTERN KINGBIRD seen at the Hurlock Waste Water Treatment ponds,
Dorchester Co, MD was spotted again on Jan 7 and 8.  Please stop at the
office to obtain permission to enter the ponds.

A BREWER'S SPARROW* was found at Occoquan Bay NWR, Woodbridge, Prince
William Co, VA. The bird was seen throughout the week near the port-a-john
on Delta Road. Latest report is for Jan 9.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was at the Denton Waste Water Treatment ponds,
Caroline Co, MD on Jan 9. A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen again at Kershner's Pond,
Burkittsville, Frederick Co, MD. Latest report is from Jan 5. Please see
MDOsprey for parking restrictions. A ROSS'S GOOSE was along Broadkill Beach
Rd, Sussex Co, DE on Jan 7. Two ROSS'S GEESE were at the Hurlock Waste Water
Treatment ponds on Jan 8. A BARNACLE GOOSE* was found in a flock of Canada
Geese on Rt 291 a short distance south of Buckingham Rd, Kent Co, MD on Jan
9. A CACKLING GOOSE was found at Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore, MD on Jan
3.
Another was on the Potomac River south of Memorial Bridge in Washington, DC
on Jan 6. A small flock of CACKLING GEESE was spotted in Little Queenstown
Creek Harbor, Queen Anne's Co, MD on Jan 6. A male EURASIAN WIGEON was seen
along Prime Hook Beach Rd, Sussex Co, DE on Jan 7. Two female COMMON EIDERS
were at Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE on Jan 7. 

A RED-THROATED LOON made an unusual appearance on Jug Bay, Patuxent River,
Anne Arundel Co, MD on Jan 5. Another was on Lake Artemesia, near College
Park, Prince Georges Co, MD the same day.

Two SANDHILL CRANES were observed at an area closed to the public at
Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Prince Georges Co, MD on Jan 6.

One PARASITIC JAEGER and one POMARINE JAEGER were seen from 84th St in
Virginia Beach, VA on Jan 7.
  
A BLACK-HEADED GULL sporadically visited the busy parking lot in front of
Best Buy at the Hunt Valley Mall, Baltimore, MD and was seen on Jan
3 and 7. An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL was on Schoolhouse Pond, Upper Marlboro,
Prince Georges Co, MD on Jan 6 and a BONAPARTE'S GULL was there on Jan 4.
Another BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen at the Denton Waste Water Treatment ponds
on Jan 9. A juvenile ICELAND GULL was spotted at the Salisbury landfill,
Wicomico Co, MD on Jan 9. A first winter GLAUCOUS GULL was found on the
James River in downtown Richmond, VA on Jan 8.

A male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues at a feeder in the woods at the Rehoboth
Yacht and Beach Club in DE.
 
A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE* was seen in the field at the end of Hagers Crossing
Drive in Hagerstown, Washington Co, MD on Jan 7, 8, and 9. A NORTHERN SHRIKE
was in Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co, MD on Jan 6. Another NORTHERN SHRIKE was
found near the Elklick Woodlands Natural Area, Centerville, Fairfax Co, VA
on Jan 5. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Kibler Rd south of Round Top Rd,
Queen Anne's Co, MD on Jan 9.

The SEDGE WREN on the Walking Dunes Trail in Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE
was seen on Jan 5 and 7. Four SEDGE WRENS were found along Maple Dam Rd,
Dorchester Co, MD on Jan 7.

A flock of 30 SNOW BUNTINGS flew near the Nature Center in Cape Henlopen SP
on Jan 7. Two SNOW BUNTINGS and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR were found at the Chuck
Wade Sod Farm on New Design Rd, Frederick Co, MD on Jan 4.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen on the Haul Rd in Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co,
VA on Jan 8. A YELLOW WARBLER was spotted in Vienna, Dorchester Co, MD on
Jan 7.

A LARK SPARROW lingered through the week along Churchmans Mill Rd near
Stuart's Draft, Augusta Co, VA; latest report is Jan 9. A LARK SPARROW was
at the Hurlock Waste Water Treatment ponds on Jan 7. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was
one of 10 species of sparrow and allies on the Howard County Conservancy,
Howard Co, MD on Jan 8.

Although the calendar says Jan 7 is Winter, a SUMMER TANAGER at a feeder in
Hampton, VA and a NASHVILLE WARBLER, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, and two
BALTIMORE ORIOLES in the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR, and
another BALTIMORE ORIOLE in Richmond seems more like Summer.
