Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from January 10, 2012

This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, January
2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.

Deposition materials are currently being placed into three big cells
occupying nearly the entire southern half of the island. This slurry will
probably discourage most waterfowl, gulls and shorebirds in coming weeks.
Intense sea duck hunting offshore has removed or driven off all the offshore
waterfowl. Also, there are lots of avian predators around to discourage
small waterfowl and shorebirds. Consequently, this latest census is rather
bland, as was the last census, December 30, 2011.

[On 5 Jan 2012 FWS conducted a muskrat census on Poplar Island
wetlands. During that census FWS personnel flushed 30-40 Virginia Rail,
several Black-crowned Night Heron, and 7 American Bittern.]

Weather: Fog, overcast am, partly cloudy pm.	Temp: 35-54 degrees
