I would urge any observers of this goose to try to get a look at the hind toes. Captive birds are supposed to have at least one hind toe clipped off. Of course compliance with that rule can never be guaranteed, but absence of clipped toes bolsters the likelihood of this being a true vagrant. It goes without saying that the toes are hard to see when the goose is swimming unless you brought your scuba diving gear with you. George refused to swim out to look at the toes yesterday. Something about not wanting to get his new, colorful fleece wet.
But seriously, folks, my own feeling is that this could be the same bird Walter Ellison saw in two different years at Great Oaks pond, which is just a few mies away. Those are the records recently accepted by the records committee.

Yesterday evening (01-11-12) Mikey Lutmerding and I had the Barnacle Goose
feeding behind the large row of cedars and pines on the south side of rt 291
east of the white warehouse. We found the goose feeding with a large Canada
Goose flock about fifteen minutes before sunset. If it wasn't for the low light
levels the bird was close enough for some nice photos. See the post Phil Davis
wrote which includes a nice google image of the area the bird seems to frequent
the most when not on the river.

Leslie Drive to the end of Buckingham road (at the boat ramp) and park. The
bird
was way far away to the left and close to the shore between the two
phragmites patches. It move around a lot so be patient. No guarantees the
bird will stay here, and it is going to feed some where, so if not in the
water area, look around the area. It was in the water until 9:40 AM, left
to feed, and returned around 10:50 AM. I left as the rain was coming in
around noon:30 PM, and the bird was still there. I think it was first found
along 291 feeding is a field, and subsequently found along Buckingham Rd.
behind the cedar trees feeding. The boat ramp is a long way from the bird as of
yesterday, so picture
opportunities are poor. George
