After a midday lunch at Friendly Farms restaurant yesterday with
Jeanne Bowman, we were proceeding northward on MD
Rte 25, Falls Road, to meet a friend at a nearby nursery
when we passed by a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks perched close together on a low wire immediately next to the road. Beautiful birds, completely unconcerned with passing traffic. Just ahead was a church and graveyard alongside the road, where we slowed to make a U-turn for a better look at the birds. At that point, we saw a largish bird on the road, so pulled off to look at it. It was a freshly
killed CHUKAR, still very pretty tho' not salvageable for mounting as it'd been run over. Probably a recent escape from a hunting venue. During the course of the morning
and early afternoon we had glassed a number of coves for
waterfowl, not seeing much of note except for a no. of Common Mergansers, Hooded Mergansers and a lone female Red-breasted Merganser along with some Canada
Geese. Virtually no passerine activity. A little serendipity. Oh! Church name: Salem United Methodist. I reverentially
placed the expired bird on the grass bordering the final resting place of the other departed spirits!
