Another curious insight to the continuing[eternal?] discussion of bird
watching versus property rights:
Several weeks ago, Jeanne Bowman and I were unsuccessfully looking
for the Short-eared Owls while parked on what appeared to be a wider
portion of the shoulder of the road, next to a gate leading into some
woods, on Bullfrog Road. A man pulled up on the road in a pick-up
and asked what we were doing. After we told him, adding that these
raptors were fairly rare, he informed us that the pasture we were observ-
ing and, indeed, the shoulder on which we were parked, as well as the
woods behind, were all his property. He hastened to add that he had no
objection to our parked cars and observing activities, expressing interest
in our actions.
It seems that many of these byways do NOT also have state/county owned
shoulders [indeed, our "shoulder" was covered in grass], so that, in our
ignorance, we are trespassing by merely pulling off of the road! Some-
thing else to contemplate on a cold, wintry evening.
