As I was driving north across the Solomons bridge this afternoon, there was a tight clump of Hubick's Rock Pigeons on the east flying a parallel course. I noticed one bird break off and fly over the bridge being followed by another. I realized quickly that the following bird was actually a Peregrine Falcon. I didn't get to see the outcome of the chase but I'm optimistic that there's one less sky rat on the St. Mary's side. Seems that during the second atlas, the peregrines nested there and decreased the pigeon population to the point that they actually became rare. Well, they've rebounded since the peregrines moved off to what we presumed was a better nesting structure on the liquid natural gas platform off of Cove Point. Maybe they're back on the Solomons bridge now! I used to see them almost daily and hope to do that again.
