This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, February 7, at
8 AM. 

Top birds this week are WESTERN GREBE* in DE, BREWER'S SPARROW* in VA, and
COMMON REDPOLL in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, EARED GREBE, NORTHERN GANNET,
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, gulls, EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE*, WHITE-WINGED DOVE*, SNOWY OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL, LOGGERHEAD
SHRIKE*, SNOW BUNTING, LARK SPARROW, DICKCISSEL, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD. 

A WESTERN GREBE was seen from the fishing pier in Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex
Co, DE on Feb 4.

The BREWER'S SPARROW* at Occoquan Bay NWR, Woodbridge, Prince William Co, VA
was found again on Jan 31.

A COMMON REDPOLL was seen at Lilypons, Frederick Co, MD on Feb 5 and another
was seen that day at the Clagett Center in Frederick Co.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE  was spotted on the lake at Black Hill Park,
Montgomery Co, MD on Jan 31 and Feb 1. A SNOW GOOSE was on the storm water
management pond on Dennis Av, Wheaton, Montgomery Co, MD on Feb 3 and 4.
There were three CACKLING GEESE at the Study Road Farm Pond, Carroll Co, MD
on Feb 3. Two CACKLING GEESE were seen from Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Anne
Arundel Co, MD on Feb 4. Two CACKLING GEESE were on the lake in Patterson
Park, Baltimore, MD on Feb 5. A fly-by CACKLING GOOSE was seen at Jefferson
Patterson Park, Calvert Co, MD on Feb 5. The Eurasian form of GREEN-WINGED
TEAL was found in the marshes along Riley Roberts Rd, Somerset Co, MD on Feb
4.

Several birders were treated to the sight of a massive flock of at least
10,000 NORTHERN GANNETS near Virginia Beach and the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge-Tunnel on Feb 4.

An EARED GREBE was seen from the Point parking lot in Cape Henlopen SP on
Feb 5. 

An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was found along Riley Roberts Rd on Feb 2, 4, and
5.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen in Clarke Co, VA on Feb 2. Another was at Hall
School Rd, Augusta Co, VA on Feb 5. A GOLDEN EAGLE was at Blackwater NWR,
Dorchester Co, MD on Feb 4.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL at the Best Buy in the Hunt Valley Mall, Baltimore, MD
was seen on Feb 1 and 3. A GLAUCOUS GULL was spotted at Pohick Bay Regional
Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Jan 31. A first year GLAUCOUS GULL was seen near
Brown's Island, Richmond, VA on Feb 1 and 2. An immature GLAUCOUS GULL was
at the Prince William Co, VA landfill on Dumfries Rd on Feb 4 and 5.

Two possible EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES* were seen in Prince Frederick, Calvert
Co, MD on Jan 31. A WHITE-WINGED DOVE* visited a feeder in Gloucester, VA on
Feb 2.

Although SNOWY OWLS are seemingly all over the upper Midwest, reports have
been scarce in our region. There was a possible sighting near an airstrip on
MD RT 2 and Mayo Rd, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Feb 3. Another possible sighting
comes from Old Landing Golf Course, Rehoboth Beach, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 3.
Neither sighting was confirmed. A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen in the Shorter's
Wharf area of Dorchester Co, MD on Jan
31 and Feb 4. A SHORT-EARED OWL shared a field with at least a dozen
NORTHERN HARRIERS in Lucketts, Loudoun Co, VA on Feb 4.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE* was found near the Ashville development, Virginia
Beach, VA on Jan 31. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE* was seen along Stone Bridge Rd,
Clarke Co, VA on Feb 2 and 4. 

Up to 20 SNOW BUNTINGS were found in the south cell at the Swan Creek/Cox
Creek facility in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD on Feb 2 and 3.

The LARK SPARROW on Brennemans Lane, Augusta Co, VA, was seen again on Feb
5.

A DICKCISSEL was at the feeders at the Nature Center at Cape Henlopen SP on
Feb 5. A BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was seen on Bowie Rd about one-half mile from Rt
3 in Westmoreland Co, VA on Feb 4.
