Hi,

While walking back to my car after a late night out w/ a friend, I flushed an American Woodcock.  This was in the 2100 block of 9th St., NW at approx. 11:40pm.  I was able to see the bird because of the streetlights but I didn't get a good look at the bird.  At first I thought that maybe I had flushed a roosting Starling.  When it landed I could see it on the sidewalk and it didn't look right for that species.   As I walked down the street I lost sight of the bird behind parked cars.  Walking further I again accidentally flushed the bird.  That time I was better able to see the shape of the bird, including the very long bill, and the flight style.  The bird was silent.

This is in a very urban part of DC - lots of buildings and pavement, not many trees.  Temp was approx. 23F with wind driven snow.  If I hadn't taken a wrong turn I would have never seen the bird.

Apologies to the Va. listserv - my posts don't always make it to Md Osprey.  I figured that this would be of interest to DC area birders.
