The two young White-winged Scoters were still in the same location
midday Tuesday Feb. 14, too.
Take the main Marsden Tract trail, which leaves the C&O Canal by the
small footbridge that is accessed from MacArthur Blvd.near Brickyard
Rd., follow the trail down to the river and go a short distance
downstream to where the Billy Goat Trail traverses a large rock
outcrop. The scoters were loosely associating with a few Mallards
just offshore.
Thanks to Dave Roberts and Dave Czaplak for reporting these
interesting ducks, which are distinctly uncommon in Montgomery
County. Paul O'Brien, in our bird club's "A Birder's Guide to
Montgomery County, Maryland," describes all three Scoter species as
"rare in late winter."
