MD Osprey:

There is not as much identification information available on the
Pink-footed Goose as there is for other species; plus the Pink-footed
is closer in appearance to other European/Asian species of geese that
need to be eliminated.

As I was preparing my report from my sighting yesterday (Tue, 02/21)
of the Pink-footed, I dusted off some of my available reference material.

At the link, below, I posted some summary identification information
on the European "Brown Goose" complex. As I note in the associated
text, this material is a bit dated, since Bean Goose has now been
split, and not all of the subspecies of this complex are treated,
however, it provides a top-level summary of the identification
situation with these geese.

I also note that since the AOU and ABA have now accepted Graylag
Goose for North America, we need to think about it as a possibility
as we look at goose flocks, and consider how to eliminate domestic
Graylag stock ... yikes!

In my sighting report, I also comment on Maryland's other report of
Pink-footed Goose (What did he say?). So you don't have to wade
through the report, here's my summary:

"Maryland actually has one other report of this taxon. In Audubon
Field Notes 13(3):281 (1959), Paul A. DuMont reported from Chesapeake
Farms (then, Remington Farms), near Chestertown, MD in Kent County, a
Bean Goose with pink-feet. The current Pink-footed Goose used to be
known as a subspecies of Bean Goose. During the MD/DC Records
Committee historical canvas, the committee Secretary, Chair, and
Maryland Birdlife editor of The Season report agreed that now it
makes more sense to consider this as a report of Pink-footed Goose,
based on current taxonomy. However, no detailed documentation was
ever located to enable a committee report of this report. Therefore,
it will be placed into the MD/DCRC "Unreviewable" category."

FYI, my full Pink-footed report is here ...

Hope this helps ...
