This morning I took a brief walk at Wooten's Landing which is located off
Sands Rd in SW Anne Arundel County, along the Patuxent River. Like others
have noted in the last few days, geese have begun migrating in force. I
counted nearly 600 in groups of about 100-300, all high-flying migrants
heading north. One of these groups held a small flock of five Cackling
Geese. Also flying north were four silent Tundra Swans.

The waterfowl on the ground have changed their behavior too. Nine
Green-winged Teal were very vocal, as the males were vigorously courting
the females. Canada Geese have begun pairing up and are becoming more
territorial. In the last few days, I've noticed many more individuals
lowering their necks and heads and charging at perceived intruders.

Additionally, yesterday, in the non-waterfowl category, I found a
Red-shouldered Hawk inspecting a nest in southern Anne Arundel County, and
many Meadowlarks singing from the tops of trees on Mellwood Rd in Prince
George's County.
