Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from February 22, 2012

This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, February
2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.

Serious construction activity at the site continues to create
questionable success in finding birds at any specific location. FWS
personnel did flush a Virginia Rail on this date and several Night Herons
were tallied. Otherwise, most ducks have departed and Dunlin appear to be
gathering for a northward flight. Herring Gulls, red-wings, and killdeer
continue to increase in numbers in anticipation of nesting.
Today was the final day of the season for deposition of dredge
materials.
