Cream colored Buffle or Ruddy?

Yesterday on the way back from St. Mary's County, I stopped by for a brief scope scan of Herrington Harbor in Southern Anne Arundel. Of interest (to me anyway), a personal high of 23 PURPLE SANDPIPERS (photographed in flight). Jim Stasz has had 27 their this year. That is the eBird number to beat.

While I was scanning, there was an all-white (cream colored) anyway small diving duck a fair distance off the jetty.  It had markings of a Ruddy, but was cavorting with a small group of five Bufflehead.  The shimmer made it tough to pick out other field marks, but the darker shades of cream color gave it a strong Ruddy look.
