I took my car in for an oil change today before work (the morning after my woodcock excursion) and ended up causing quite a stir among the mechanics when they dug a large bat out of the grill of my car. Apparently the bat had flown in front of my car as I drove north on MD 382 last night. I remember seeing what I thought was a leaf or piece of trash blow in front of my car as I drove, but it also crossed my mind "I hope that wasn't a screech owl". However, I didn't think too much of it after that.
I got several photos of the bat in question and believe that it was a Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus). It easily reached the 11 inch wingspan listed for the upper limit of that species. The mechanic said that this would make a good subaru commercial. Perhaps my charitable donation should go to a bat preservation fund...
