Hi all,

We and a number of other birders were looking for the Common Teal reported Friday from Lilypons (and seen again yesterday by at least one person). We arrived about 8:30 AM and walked down to the large pond at the back end, bordering Lower Monocacy Bottom Rd., which is closed to traffic. There were about 10-11 teal in the pond, all the males were saw were clearly Green-winged Teal. We crossed over the road and looked into the ponds on the other side, seeing one drake GW Teal but two others flushed that could not be identified. Walking back, the teal that had been in the large pond were gone and others reported seeing them fly off towards the west, However shortly several flocks of teal, totaling about 15-20 birds, came flying in and although they looked as if they wanted to land in the large pond, circled a few times, and disappeared over the tree line in the direction of the river.

We checked out other ponds and found two more drake GW Teal. However there were definitely more teal in the air than we saw on the deck, so probably a fair chance the Common Teal is still around. The birds are flighty and elusive. Hope someone connects and reports a success!

In all we had 6 species of duck: American Wigeon, Hooded Merganser, Am. Black Duck, Wood Duck, Mallard and GW Teal.

Other birds of interest:

Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1
American Kestrel- 1
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1
Red-tailed Hawk - 2
Killdeer - 3
Field Sparrow - 2-3 , one singing
Swamp Sparrow - 2
Eastern Meadowlark - 1

Lots of Redwings singing on territory, spring is definitely here!
