Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from March 14, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, March
2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.
It was a good bird day on the island with over 1200 surface-feeding
ducks, and over 1500 diving ducks. Northern Gannets were streaming up the
Chesapeake where surely one culd have tallied 100's or even 1000's if
counting through the day from a stationary point. On the island were
Ring-necked Duck and American Robin, and this was just the second sighting
for each of these.
