I checked the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park in the
southeast corner of Carroll County this afternoon. It is the lowest
elevation in the county and often sees the first Louisiana Waterthrush of
the year in Carroll. However, there were no warblers to be found on either
the South Branch or the North Branch in the park. Eight Wood Ducks were on
the North Branch and Phoebes were scattered throughout but the only other
migrants I found were a Golden-crowned Kinglet and a few Juncos. Meanwhile
Diane Ford added Montgomery County to the list of counties with new
Louisiana Waterthrush arrival records.
Wildflowers in the park were blooming in profusion and many I saw were
new personal early dates there, including Slender Toothwort (by 16 days),
Round-lobed Hepatica (5 days), Pennywort (24 days), Dwarf Cinquefoil (18
days), and Spiderwort (25 days).
