The highlight of the Howard County Bird Club's field trip to Waterford Farm
today was a recently fledged Horned Lark. A picture by Sue Earp, of this
fledgling is attached to the eBird checklist, on the link below.
Acording to the Birds of North America, Horned Larks have an eleven day
incubation period. After 10 days their body is covered with contour
feathers. The young bird we found today could already fly. It didn't soar
like an eagle but at least it got a couple of feet off the ground for at
least 10 yards. I suspect the larks were nesting in late February.
