Nancy and I went to the C&O Canal near MP 72-73 after lunch today to look for wildflowers along the Ferry Hill trail. As we got out of our car, we heard a Yellow-throated Warbler singing. We found and photographed lots of wildflowers and then continued to walk along the canal, looking for birds.

In addition to the Yellow-throated Warbler, notable species included two pair of Wood Ducks on the river, a pair of Common Ravens at their usual nesting site under the train trestle, and a calling Barred Owl.

All together we had twenty species as show in the following list:

Double-crested Cormorant
Canada Goose
Wood Duck
Barred Owl
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Hairy Woodpecker
American Crow
Fish Crow
Common Raven
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
Tree Swallow
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Northern Cardinal
