Just got back from 5hr spent birding around the Zoo and along the Valley
Trail in Rock Creek Park. This was my annual check-in on the Black-Crowned
Night Herons at the Bird House. I counted 89 on one quick walk-through to
try to minimize re-counts as the birds were moving around a lot, but I know
this count is going to be fairly inaccurate. Some truly incredible
opportunities to study these birds at close range. Got some fantastic
photos and answered some questions that some people had as they saw me
taking photos. If you want close-ups on these birds this is definitely
where you need to be.

Along the Valley Trail I had some great birds as well. FOY Louisiana
Waterthrush, (singing along Piney Branch at Park Rd), Blue-Gray
Gnatcatcher, and Chipping Sparrow. Tons of Hermit Thrushes around, several
singing. Got my first ever photo of a Winter Wren (elusive little guys!).
The usual suspects were present, and in pretty good numbers. A gorgeous
afternoon :) Still waiting on my FOY Palm Warbler!
