MD Birders,
The exciting start to 2012 continued in March.  The seemingly steady stream of rarities that kicked off the year (think barnacle and pink-footed goose) was replaced by an early spring with a number of MD and county early arrival records (e.g., yellow-throated warbler and Louisiana waterthrush).  By my estimate, MD birders tallied a total of 208 species in March and added 23 species to the year list.  This raised the comprehensive 2012 list up to 240 species.  It is interesting, at least to me, that despite the influx of  migrants in March, the monthly tallies have been relatively similar so far this year (203 in January and 202 in February).  I don't suspect this trend will not continue into April and May, however.

You can view the latest update in detail on Bill Hubick's web site (http://www.billhubick.com/docs/MD_Comp_List_2012.pdf).  Please let me know if you see any mistakes or missing records.  As usual, if you observe a species that is sensitive or on private property and are hesitant to post to Osprey or e-bird, let me know and I'll include them in the list with only limited location information.  Since new species will be added to the Comp List regularly in April, I'll send out mid-month update in a couple of weeks.  Only 3 days into April, 4 more species have already been added!

Many thanks to the numerous birders who have submitted records and helped with the list so far!

Cheers,
Dave
