Bill Moody alerted me a week or so ago that he had seen a Northern Gannet from his house on the St. Mary's side of the lower Patuxent River, south of the Thomas Johnson bridge. Since then I think I've seen NOGAs in the wide basin, near Solomons, almost daily. Today on my way across the bridge into St. Mary's, I saw four birds. If you go to the boardwalk in Solomons you should be able to see them quite clearly though sometimes they roam down closer to the mouth of the river which is more easily viewed from near the Chesapeake Biological Lab pier at the very end of the island. If you're a county lister, just watch as they wander back and forth across the river between St. Mary's and Calvert Counties. Keep in mind the center light pylon on the bridge is the county line. It's not so clear in the wider part of the river.
