Lisa and I arrived at Kenilworth Park in northeast DC a little after 11 am.  We did not see any other birders there; (the) three "fly fishermen" were still practicing their casting.  Gail and Barry had already departed, judging from their email. After a few minutes we located the Upland Sandpiper, which was near the goalpost furtherest back from the road bend.  The sandpiper was alert, and walking even further away from the road.  At no time did we see it fly, and for some minutes we couldn't locate the bird, perhaps because it was just over a slight rise.  But it did eventually emerge into view, and continued to walk or stand alert as the fly fishermen walked past it at about a 150 foot distance.  We watched it carefully from a comparable distance, taking care not to make it fly.

The fishermen were practicing casting and reeling, for a competition somewhere in the Middle Atlantic region.  They were casting 750 or more feet, which impressed us. Far be it for a DC lister to saypeople competing simply to castfishing lureshave an unusual hobby.

We sauntered over to the aquatic gardens on our way home, and did not see any unusual Ardeidae there.  On the way back we heard the tail end of today's animal show on WAMU FM, with Doctor Gwen Brewer saying something about bird behavior.
