I spoke to the director at Adkins Arboretum. Basically if  someone decides to bird at Adkins early in the morning and leaves before staff arrives, there is no way to collect the entrance fee. If you would like you can pay for the early visit at a later time when staff is there.  Which means it is up to you whether or not you want to pay. Just remember to call ahead if you wish to arrive early during the week. Otherwise the gate will be open all weekend in May.

While I was at Adkins this morning I came across the following birds:

Northern Parula  1 at the north bridge going out of the arboretum
Ovenbird  1 along the wetlands on Blockston Branch Walk
Louisiana Waterthrush  2,  1 at the north bridge, 1 on Creekside Walk
Common Yellowthroat  1 shrubs in north field (Nancy's Loop)
Hermit Thrush3, 2 on north Tuckahoe Valley Trail, 1 on River Birch Alley Walk
