Birded Allegany and Frederick counties today. Highlight was the SURF
SCOTERS at Rocky Gap already noted by Peter Kaestner. However, I
believe they were two males rather than a pair. Both had orange bills,
though the white patch on the back of the neck of one bird was
indistinct, which I believe suggests molt or a young bird. Rather
surprising that they stuck around with all the boats on the water and
people on the shores! One COMMON LOON was also hanging on amidst the
commotion.

Also birded along the canal and my eBird list for Spring Gap is below.
Highlight for me was finally getting my close out BLACK VULTURE, and two
YELLOW THROATED VIREOS were also nice. A female COMMON MERGANSER
calling repeatedly suggested that they might be breeding in that
location. Also had a pair of YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS during a brief
stop at the Fifteen Mile Creek C&O Canal access point.

There was only a SPOTTED SANDPIPER and a Killdeer at the North Branch
treatment pools, and a PIED-BILLED GREBE at Cumberland terminus.

Checked in to see if the Red-headed Woodpecker was still hanging out in
Green Ridge State Forest. Did not see it, but nearby had a male HOODED
WARBLER (singing a song totally unlike its typical song that I had not
heard of before), WORM-EATING WARBLER, several PRAIRIE WARBLERs, and
singing Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Checked in at some of the north Frederick County ponds for scarce
Frederick County shorebirds. On my way there I had my county WILD
TURKEY in a field. At the Toms Creek Church pond there were only six
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, but a flock of 20 AMERICAN PIPITS was a bonus. At
the east Harney Rd. pond there were also AMERICAN PIPITS plus PECTORAL
SANDPIPERs, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERs, and WILSON'S SNIPE.
