Hi All,

This morning I visited 3 birding sites in Anacostia, Washington, DC 1) Kenilworth park, Fort DuPont, and Anacostia Park.

Kenilworth Park: I Got there pretty early around 7:30 am to see if the Upland Sandpiper was was around.  Pulling into the parking area I saw Paul Pisano happily emailing MDOsprey that the Uppie indeed decided to spend the night and was still contently foraging in the tall grass where it has been earlier reported.

Fort DuPont: Deciding I wanted to check out some mature forest, I bid Paul farewell and I headed over to what is arguable the best mature stand of forest in the City.  Inspite of a good number of birds, the species diversity was a little low.  I had my FOY Northern Parula, along with a fair number of Hermit Thurshes, nice numbers of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and the usual resident and winter resident birds.  Lots of deer present as well as garter snakes, and lizards and a lone morning cloak.  I visited the lower (northernwestern) section of the park, and I think the higher, ridge area might have been more productive.

Anacostia Park:  The surprise here was a large number of Laughing Gulls.  I counted a couple dozen with some lounging on sandbars and other groups calling and flying overhead.  I tried to make some of them out as Boonies, but they were all too big, red-billed, etc.  Savannah Sparrow were present along the bike path and at Poplar Point.  There's still some water (amazingly) in the pond/marsh at Poplar Point and is being put to good use by a singing Common Yellowthroat.  By the time I got there (about 10am) it was getting warm and the bird activity was falling off.

All in all, a nice morning.

P.S. A detailed list of the birds seen is in eBird under these locations.
