Matt Anthony and I went out in search of nightjars in St. Mary's County last night. We tried at the county airport in California shortly after 8:15. Heard a Whip-poor-will on the north side of the runway. No chucks so we headed around back of the runway on Lawrence Hayden Road. It's dismaying the amount of construction near the end which is certainly going to be the connection between Wildewood Parkway to Lawrence Hayden. A huge swath right up through the middle of some great Whip habitat :(

Anyway, no love there so we went to Patuxent Blvd. to Myrtle Point Park which was silent then stopped at Patuxent Blvd. and Mill Cove Road, also silent. Went back to the airport and before we even turned the car off, there was a Chuck-will's-widow singing very close to the edge of the road.

We hung around the airport and then the shopping center trying for Common Nighthawk without success. I've scored the trifecta a couple of times on May Count so this is a bit early but hope springs eternal!
