Around noon today, I returned home after picking up my son from
school. Doesn't take much to make a 2 and a 4-year old to fall
asleep, especially when they're inside of a moving vehicle.

Since they were asleep by the time I turned into the driveway, I
opened all the doors and I sat down next to the car and enjoy the many
new birds. I've been out-of-commission with a really bad cold since
Saturday, so I've been really thankful that the birds are now coming
to my yard (instead of having to physically move and chase them
around, use gas, stay out all day and night).

THE KETTLE: As soon as I sat down, a kettle started up from the trees:
7 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 SHARP-SHINNED, 2 BV's and 2 TV's joined in the sky
circling quite low. An Osprey (resident) flew quickly East, but then
rising into the group (almost from directly across the street from my
home), was this all black buteo with. From inside my bins, it looked
like a single white, bold tail stripe. I grabbed my camera and took
these:

I am not sure if this is a truly-rare thing?, a trick with lighting?,
my imagination?, the effects of the antibiotics?, nevertheless, I was
impressed.

Some might notice that I performed some 'shadow-elimination' to try to
coax more white from underwing. In others, I tweaked the exposure up
a notch. The sun was out, but so were some clouds. If shooting
straight-up is noon, I was taking these photos at around 10 o'clock.

Other news: Chestnut-sided Warbler, a dead under the window BTBlue
Warbler, LOADS of warblers, a few thrushes, tanagers, Grosbeaks over
the past few day. This evening, a minimum of 4 (2 M, 2 F)
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks on my feeder, or doing their acrobatic feeding
in the Tulip Poplar above it.

Good Birding,

Dan Haas
