I had a singing Yellow-breast Chat in the dense understory along the trail on the backside of Schoolhouse Pond today at lunch. Chats are somewhat unusual at the pond, probably owing to a lack of the type of habitat they seem to prefer, so it was a nice surprise for the day. I did not hear the Virginia Rail at lunch today and I haven't had the chance to walk the last two mornings to check than. Other birds singing included American Redstarts, Northern Parula, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Common Yellowthroats, and Gray Catbirds. Also of note was one Solitary Sandpiper on the rear mudflats.
