Hi all,

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Barry and I decided to start this morning -- this time early! -- at Brookside Gardens as the high ridge there catches first light in the morning. This paid off with a nice selection of warblers, highlighted by FOS CAPE MAY WARBLER -- two bright singing males together! -- as well as FOS BLACKPOLL WARBLER and many many Baltimore Orioles singing, chasing and being very conspicuous. (I always like to point them out to folks since a lot of people have actually never seen one except on a baseball cap.) After that we went over to the Pine Lake arera and added FOS WORM-EATING WARBLER near the upper end of the lake. The Prothonotary was heard singing in the wet area right at the head of the lake, probably in or near the willow clumps. We saw 13 species of warbler (some heard-only) but NO Yellowthroat! Also, no White-throated Sparrows today. Fruiting shadbush is attracting a lot of thrushes, today only Swainson's. as well as a bright male Scarlet Tanager. Still more Orioles around the lake, but passerine activity started to die at about 8:30. On the lake proper, a Green Heron is back and the Coot lingers. We then went over to the north end of Sligo Park to check out the ponds there as well as an oak area often good for warblers. Unfortunately the day had died and we saw little, although mud on one pond had a few shorebirds (Spotted and Solitary).
