This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, May 8, at 11 AM. 

The AFRICAN GREY PARROT that escaped over two weeks ago from its owners at
the Holton Arms School in Bethesda, MD, still has not been found. The bird
is named "Skeeter" and responds to whistles. Sightings should be reported to

Top birds this week are ANHINGA in MD, MISSISSIPPI KITES* in MD and DE,
GOLDEN EAGLE, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, and CERULEAN WARBLER in DC, FORK-TAILED
FLYCATCHER* in DE, and MOURNING WARBLER in MD.

Other birds of interest include CANVASBACK, BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER, RUFF, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, MONK
PARAKEET, and HENSLOW'S SPARROW*.

On May 4, an ANHINGA was discovered at Lake Waterford Pk, Anne Arundel Co
MD. It has remained there through May 7. A MISSISSIPPI KITE appeared on May
1 over Soldier's Delight Natural Area, Baltimore Co MD, and on May 7, four
MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen flying over Taylor's Gut, Kent Co DE. Near the
Washington Monument in NW/SW DC, a GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on May 2. Another
GOLDEN EAGLE was seen near Great Falls, Montgomery Co MD, on May 7. A little
outside our normal reporting area, a FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER was reported at
Coverdale Farm Preserve, in extreme N DE (near the PA line) on May 3. Rock
Creek Pk, NW DC, hosted a PHILADELPHIA VIREO on May 2, and a CERULEAN
WARBLER on May 1. A MOURNING WARBLER was a back-yard surprise in Woodstock
MD (Howard Co) on May 5.

A late-staying CANVASBACK was discovered May 7 at Hart-Miller Island,
Baltimore Co MD. The only hawk watch seeing BROAD-WINGED HAWKS has been Fort
Smallwood, Anne Arundel Co MD, with a high count of 43 on May 3, but only
single-digit counts on other days.

Hart-Miller Island hosted an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER ON May 7. Also on May 7,
a REEVE (a female RUFF) was spotted at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co VA. At
the Germantown MD Soccerplex (Montgomery Co), a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was
seen by several on May 4, and photographed for ID. A single WILSON'S
PHALAROPE was spotted May 5 in Shearness Pond, Bombay Hook NWR,Kent Co DE.

Once in a while, MONK PARAKEETS are still seen around Laurel MD (Prince
George's Co), the latest being a pair in the Montpelier neighborhood on May
2. Finally, the HENSLOW'S SPARROWS reported last week in Forest Hill,
Harford Co MD, are still around and still singing, for the past week.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
