Hi Everyone,

I've had a few inquiries about CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOWs at Weinberg Park. Singing has been very sporadic for the last week or so, but seems to have picked up in earnest over the last couple nights. One is singing up a storm tonight. See my previous post below for directions.

I continue to do 20-40 minutes of night-listening each night. The last few days have been fairly slow, but last night (5/13) featured my first-of-the-year GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH.

Good birding!

Bill

>As posted recently by Matt Grey, our local CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW has returned to Weinberg Park on schedule and is singing away. I like to post about this location each spring, as it is one of the closest and most reliable CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOWs for birders on the western shore.

While regular in several areas in the county and elsewhere on the western shore coastal plain, this is probably the most consistent and convenient. To visit, take Fort Smallwood Road like you're going to Fort Smallwood Park and take a left on Fairview Beach Road. Park at the first gate on the right and just listen. He usually gets started right at dusk and is also active pre-dawn. Tape use or any other form of disturbance (including trying to see the bird) at this tiny breeding area is unnecessary and is not appropriate. Enjoy!
