Went over to the Canal and environs for a couple of hours ( 4- 6:15 )
today. Lots of birds.
Both going out and coming back we heard and saw a Yellow-throated Vireo in
the trees right in front of the restrooms. I’m sure he is nesting nearby.
Beautiful bird.
Heard and saw a nice Warbling Vireo in the big Sycamore at the base of the
water intake platform.
Walked up the river trail and then back on the tow path. We surely heard
10-12 more Warbling Vireos, several Great-crested Flycatchers, and a
calling Acadian Flycatcher.
On the river 30-plus cormorants, a couple of female Wood Ducks, an adult
Bald Eagle in a tree.
On the tow path two soaring Red-tailed Hawks, numerous Chimney Swifts, four
Common Nighthawks, two perched Rough-wing Swallows near the platform, a
loudly calling Prothonotary Warbler (not seen) just at the base of the
platform, and a flying Black-crown Night Heron. Last, but surely not
least, we both saw and heard MANY Orioles, of both species. What a
wonderfully birdy place!!
