Yesterday 5/16 I birded Assateague which was kind of slow, but Life of the Dunes Trail had 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flying around and calling at 10 am. I though they were Woodcock peenting and could't quite figure where they were, but then I got to clearing and looked up and saw the "peenting" was actually 2 Nighthawks. There were also 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS at Life of the Dunes but back off the trail on the old road to the bay in the grove of dead trees. Today, I found a DICKCISSEL calling from a telephone wire at the corner of 354 and Mt. Zion Church Rd. It is the same spot Mark Hoffman found one last year. I also found 11 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in different spots in the Snow Hill area. There was 1 on Old Beech Rd. There had been 2 here the last two times I passed through here. Maybe one was on a nest??? Next, I found 3 in the first clearing on Forrest RD. Lastly, I drove down Corner House Rd. There are several clearings with dead trees on this road and there were a total of 7 Red-headeds between the 3 clearings I checked. -Scott Housten
