I have been visiting Piney Run Park frequently to observe the Bald Eagle
nest, the first for the park. The only other nest in the county was one at
Liberty Lake briefly during the atlas. Those birds relocated to the
Baltimore County side.
Tuesday I saw one of the young eagles perched on the edge of the nest
and the other young perched on a branch above it. Both appear to be
full-grown. An adult was perched below the nest. Birds seen on the lake
included an immature Mute Swan of unknown origin at White Rock Road and two
Common Loons, an adult and an immature.
Today I saw no activity at the eagle nest for a long time before one of
the young jumped from somewhere beside the nest onto the edge, flapped its
wings a few times before losing its balance and dropping out of sight into
the forest below. The nest remained empty when I left. On the lake were
four Common Loons, an adult and three immatures. I also saw one Green Heron
and one Spotted Sandpiper. I did not look for the swan.
