I was also looking for terns at Violettes Lock this morning. There were
none to be seen. Not having heard of Jim Moore's report at the time I was
surprised to see a breeding-plumaged female Red-necked Phalarope fly in and
land on the river. I watched it off and on from 9:40 until I left about
11AM as it drifted downstream, feeding on the surface of the calmer waters
near the Virginia shore before flying a short distance upstream to continue
the process. For short periods it would disappear behind some of the logs
lodged in the rapids.
I also visited the Summer Tanager location on River Road. There was no
action for 15-20 minutes before I heard a "picky tuck" call about 50 yards
west of the 20301 gate. The calling continued for about a minute before
fading off to the north. A little while later two birds approached silently
from the direction in which the voice disappeared. It was the female Summer
Tanager followed by the male. The male did some brief flycatching then both
birds moved to the south side of the road where I lost track of them. I met
Fred Fallon there and alerted him to where I had last seen them and also to
the Red-necked Phalarope at Violettes Lock which now seems to have become
two.
