Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from May 24, 2012

This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, May 2012,
Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.

Tropical storm Alberto with counterclockwise motion brought
us strong wind from the northeast blowing southwest beginning late on 20 May
- the date of the new moon when north transient shorebirds historically
reach this latitude. These conditions, unfavorable to north transient
shorebirds prevailed until the storm moved well offshore by Tuesday, however
a northwest low-pressure system moving east immediately took the place of
the tropical storm, keeping the weather turbid with prevailing northwest
breezes. This front largely cleared us Thursday morning, permitting a nice
flow of warm air from the southwest with conditions favorable to north
transient shorebirds, as attested by this census containing nearly 10,000
shorebirds. The tally can speak for itself.

Weather: Overcast, foggy am, partly sunny pm Temp: 70-80 degrees F
