Highlight of today's trip to Dumpster Road, Riley Roberts Road, and Deal Island proper to Wenona was a least bittern feeding in plain sight of Deal Island Road for at least 10 minutes, at approximately 8:30 am. During that time it caught and ate 2 fish. It was foraging at the base of a long patch of needlerush south of the road, just east of the utility pole with yellow labels 38955 over 86568. Lat-longs where we were parked are 38 10.984, 75 52.308.
Other delights at Dumpster Road included:
glossy ibis, many
black-necked stilt 6+
short-billed dowitcher 2
tricolored heron 3
green heron 4
Virginia rail, several, including a disappearing rump in the vicinity of the bittern
boat-tailed grackle, lots
Riley Roberts Road held many flies and a small horde of crabbers.
At the defunct marina on the left before the bridge at Chance there were royal terns and a dc cormorant sporting a metal band (too far away to attempt to read!). I wonder if this is one of Dave Brinker's bands from the Holland Island colony.
A side excursion on Drawbridge Road at 10:30 yielded acadian flycatcher, prairie warbler, yellow-breasted chat, worm-eating warbler, ovenbird, and field sparrow, among others.
