Following my BBS this morning I drove around the Monocacy Grasslands IBA
(Emmitsburg-Taneytown area) looking for Dickcissels, I found 12 singing
males in all. Last year I saw c.25 singing males in Frederick County - but
hadn't seen any by this date!
Frederick:
Creamery Rd (stop 48 on my BBS route) – 1
Schriver Rd – 1
Harney Rd – 1
Bollinger School Rd, right on the PA state line - 1
Six Rd north of Toms Creek - 1 (two there yesterday)
Sixes Rd south of Toms Creek - 3
Sixes Bridge Rd, between Grimes Rd and Sixes Rd - 2
Carroll:
Bullfrog Rd, half mile or so from county line/Monocacy - 2
I think a couple of those recently reported by Jim Wilkinson (and
others) are additional to these. Also, several observers have reported up
to 4 Dickcissels on Oland Rd.
Also a female Northern Harrier this morning, presumably a
summering/breeding bird. Yesterday in that general area I saw lingering
Ring-necked Duck, Ruddy Duck and Coot (Emmitsburg WTW), Semipalmated
Plover, and 5 Red-headed Woodpeckers total.
Disappointed to to hear a single Cerulean Warbler on my BBS route, I did
have one Kentuckey Warbler though.
Cheers
Andy Wilson
