I was joined by Elaine Hendricks and Kathy Calvert at the Howard
Conservancy looking for the Alder Flycatcher late this morning. A Willow
Flycatcher was singing very close to Route 99. It was doing both its
two-note song and its Alder-like three-note song. Later the Alder
Flycatcher started vocalizing farther away from the road. Thanks to Elaine
and Kathy for getting me directed on it. It was doing the single-note song
that Sibley describes as "rrreep" and not the more familiar (to me)
three-note song as well as the "pip" note. Apparently this is the only song
it has been singing. Thanks again to Kathy for keeping me straight on the
song.
There have been other summering records of Alder Flycatchers in the
Piedmont in the past (in Frederick, Carroll, and Baltimore counties) but no
breeding records. All the reports have been males holding territories.
Usually there have been Willow Flycatchers nearby to confuse the issue.
Known breeding Alder Flycatchers have been confined to Garrett County. It
will be interesting to see how long this bird stays.
