Yesterday I visited one of my favorite sparrow spots at the Howard Conservancy looking for sparrows. I was immediately alerted by a “freebeer” call from a flycatcher in the reconstructed wetland area. I have had Willow Flys singing there over the last few weeks but this bird was obviously different. I waited and listened to it sing a very distinct “freebeer” call about a dozen times. It then flew to the other side of the stream....I played the Alder call with my phone and the bird immediately called back and flew back to me. Every time I tried to take video the bird would not sing!

The bird was acting like it was on territory...however I have been there numerous times over the last few weeks in that specific field and not heard it.

The conservancy is open dawn to dusk...link is on the howardbirds.org website. It is in the field (you have to bushwhack) along the stream beside Rt. 99 .
It would be great if this bird hung around! It is very vocal so if you visit please do not play tapes as it may be disturbed.
